Unit 1 Overview

The Global Tapestry (1200–1450)

Developments across major world regions.

What This Unit Covers Unit 1 establishes the baseline for the AP World History curriculum by examining the major civilizations of the Afro-Eurasian and American worlds around 1200 CE. It focuses on how empires expanded, organized their governance, and maintained authority through religious, technological, and economic systems before the era of intensive global interaction.

Why It Matters on the Exam This unit accounts for 8–10% of the AP exam and serves as the foundation for the "comparison" and "continuity and change" skills required in the DBQ and LEQ. You should expect multiple-choice questions that require you to analyze primary source documents or maps to identify patterns of governance and cultural diffusion across different regions.

How to Study It

  • Create a Regional Matrix: Build a chart comparing the political structures of major empires (e.g., the Song Dynasty, the Abbasid Caliphate, and the Mali Empire) to easily identify similarities in bureaucratic centralization.
  • Map the Trade Routes: Memorize the locations and significance of major trade networks—the Silk Roads, Trans-Saharan routes, and Indian Ocean trade—as these are the primary vehicles for the cultural and technological exchange discussed in these topics.
  • Focus on State-Building Strategies: Practice explaining how different states maintained power, such as the use of Confucianism in China, the expansion of Islam in Afro-Eurasia, or the tribute systems in the Americas.
  • Use the "Comparison" Skill: Pick two regions from the unit and practice drafting a thesis statement that argues how their political or religious developments were similar or different.
